Covid-19No clinical article for December, instead I’d like to speak to the issue of resilience. For the majority of 2020, we’ve been in the clutches of a major pandemic, for which there has been no easy answers, where science often seemed befuddled, and predictions were all over the place and often abysmally inaccurate.

We’ve postponed or canceled weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, holiday celebrations and even funerals. We’ve had to face the anguish of not being able to tend to seriously ill family members or friends — when they needed us most.

Many of us have taken to working from home, while managing the demands of child care, homeschooling online, while masking up to go everywhere and keeping our distance.

The lessons in all of this, for me at least, are the indomitability of the human spirit, and our ability to adapt to almost anything. We are resilient, we triumph, and if this is a test, we’re passing it. And we’ve likely learned a lot too, some of which has helped us reevaluate our missions and priorities going forward.

I am grateful to each and every one of you for following my work and for being colleagues of mine, albeit at a distance — particularly this year.

Best wishes for a healthy, prosperous and much less challenging 2021.

Joe
