The pessimist sees what’s happening today, but expects only an eventual drop-off. After all, the glass is already half empty, so it’s bound to develop a crack, with the contents eventually leaking out all over the place. The future is only going to get worse.
The optimist also sees the present, but doesn’t link or associate what’s happening today with how things will be tomorrow, the day after, or the day after that. The glass is half full, thus there is always room for more. This is vision viewed through the prism of possibility.
If we don’t carve out a space in our thinking and behavior that includes the future tense, our lives are essentially a fait accompli; so it’s important to realize that there’s a difference between what’s happening right now and what might happen next.
The engine of optimism and self-fulfillment is fueled by embracing the potential of tomorrow.
