If you’re either gripped by fear or wish to avoid having to face it, here’s what to do:
- Encase yourself in your own version of a protective bubble of some sort; that is, isolate yourself. Then tightly control who or what you allow into this world.
- Take absolutely no risks, even reasonable ones. Play it as safe as you possibly can.
- Guard against setting any goal that may be a harbinger of failure. This will protect you from disappointment and feelings of inadequacy.
- Eschew trying anything new because new and even adventuresome pursuits are fraught with uncertainty.
- Be diligent about keeping anything threatening to you at bay. Live at Defcon 1.
Or… you can take a pin to the bubble; venture out of your comfort zone; set reasonable goals and chip away at attaining them day to day; try your hand at what you’ve often thought and dreamed about doing; and embrace threat as something that is often manufactured and built up to levels way beyond what it deserves. Do these things and you will have shaken hands with the fear, stared into its eyes, asserted yourself, and whittled away at its size and scope.
The choice is yours.
